UMass Faculty

Campus Based Programs

The Arts Extension Service (AES) was founded in 1973, to "take the arts resources of the University and share them with the Commonwealth." AES is now a national arts service organization, but continues to work in this university outreach, community development tradition.  In addition to serving students, staff and faculty at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, AES’ teaching, consulting, and publications reach arts managers, artists, and civic leaders in states, the country and around the globe.

Through support from the Vice Provost for Outreach and the UMass Arts Council, AES offers a series of programs for students, staff and faculty of the University (most of which are also open to the public):

Campus Lectures:  AES offers lectures and workshops to students enrolled in a diverse array of university departments, from Fine Arts to Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning. We are pleased to make presentations on a variety of arts management topics at classes and symposia, and often extend visits from visiting faculty and national arts leaders working with us on other projects to join in these presentations. Contact AES at 545-2360 or aes@outreach.umass.edu to schedule a presentation for your class or lecture series.

New Campus-wide Arts and Culture Internship Program: In partnership with WFCR and Career Services, AES has initiated the planning for a new campus-wide arts and culture internship program.  This new coordinated program, which includes partners in 20 different UMass arts and culture departments, will provide students with an orientation to arts and culture internship opportunities on campus.  The program will commence in the fall of 2009.

Artist Business Training Programs:  For decades, AES has offered training programs on business skills for emerging artists that have been well received by UMass students, staff, faculty, and community members. Contact AES at 545-2360 or aes@outreach.umass.edu to learn more about our artist in business programs.

Arts Management Online Classes:  We welcome the addition of UMass students to any of our Arts Management Online courses—in strategic planning, board development, fundraising, marketing, financial management, arts programming, program evaluation, arts education and creative economy.  Contact AES at 545-2360 or aes@outreach.umass.edu to learn more about how to register.
